Although the tournament technically begins with Tuesday & Wednesday’s First Four games, the tournament First Round starts on Thursday, March 21st. That’s when most bracket contests officially begin.

Bracket Contests rarely consider First Four games, meaning you will likely have until early Thursday morning to make your picks & submit your bracket.

How Are March Madness Bracket Contests Scored?

The most common March Madness bracket contests require participants to pick the winner of every game before the tournament starts. This includes all hypothetical matchups that follow the First Round, all the way to the National Championship.

And that’s where things get dangerous: make a risky upset pick too early and the team you thought would be “one & done” could make a run for the title.

Correct picks earn points while losing picks get nothing. Scoring can vary from one contest to the next; sometimes, more perilous picks are rewarded with higher point totals, but only if they’re correct!

But more often than not, correct picks are awarded points based on the following format:

Correct picks in the First Round – One PointCorrect picks in the Second Round – Two PointsCorrect picks in the Sweet Sixteen – Four PointsCorrect picks in the Elite Eight – Eight PointsCorrect picks in the Final Four – Sixteen PointsCorrect pick in the National Championship – Thirty-Two Points

The point totals sometimes change, but the format is the same: correct picks in later rounds will earn higher point totals overall.

And in the case of a tie, most contests will have all participants guess the Total Points Scored in the National Championship. The guess closest to the point total in the title game will determine the winner!

Watch Out for These First Round Matchups & Potential Upsets

To paraphrase Benjamin Franklin, in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes, and first round March Madness upsets.

The trick to predicting upsets, however, starts with knowing they don’t happen just because we want them to. Upsets are why there’s madness in March, but seeing them everywhere is pure lunacy.

With that in mind and the 2024 NCAA Tournament bracket fresh out of the oven, here are our “first impression” upsets to consider. You may want to make a play on one or two, but don’t convince yourself that they’ll all happen:

– #12 McNeese State over #5 Gonzaga – One of four 30-win teams in the tournament, the Cowboys lost only three games all season and could pick off a Bulldogs team in the midst of a down season. – #12 Grand Canyon over #5 Saint Mary’s – Wait, another 12-seed knocking out a favorite from the WCC? You better believe it. The Lopes open as +5.5 dogs, but their strong guard play will push the slow-tempo Gaels. – #10 Drake over #7 Washington State – This one is technically an upset, but the Bulldogs open as -1 favorites after grinding to win the MVC. They’re also 4-1 against other tourney teams this season. – #11 New Mexico over #6 Clemson – Another favorite hiding behind a lower seed, due to a sixth-place finish in a stacked Mountain West. The Lobos open as -2 favorites and it’s deserved: New Mexico sits eleven places higher than Clemson on the final KenPom table.
