2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Odds & Picks: Wednesday (7/26)

Another stunning result rolled in overnight, as the Philippines claimed their first ever World Cup victory, besting co-host New Zealand 1-0 on a goal in the 24th minute by Sarina Bolden. A scoreless draw between Norway and Switzerland in the other Group A match leaves the Norwegian squad in a difficult spot. They’ll need a win by more than a goal and some help if they’re going to advance to the knockout round. All of Group C will take the pitch Wednesday, along with one game from Groups C and E, including the United States.

Japan vs. Costa Rica

Japan would all but assure themselves of a spot in the knockout round with a win over Costa Rica. There’s no reason to think Futoshi Ikeda’s squad won’t make that a reality against a Costa Rican squad that looked outclassed in their opener against Spain.

The Pick: Anytime Goalscorer – Mina Tanaka (-140)

Spain vs. Zambia

The Spanish contingent can put themselves in prime position to advance as well, with a win over Zambia. Spain’s defense was a brick wall in their win over Costa Rica, and keeper Misa Rodríguez may not see a shot on goal until their third game of group play if the Spanish defense repeats their performance.

The Pick: Anytime Goalscorer – Aitana Bonmatí (+125)

Canada vs. Ireland

Nigeria surprised Canada in the opening match for both teams, holding the group favorite to a 0-0 draw in their first game of Group C play. Christine Sinclair and the rest of her Canadian teammates need to re-focus and come out aggressively against Ireland, in search of three points on Wednesday, if they want to advance.

The Pick: Canada (-150)

United States vs. Netherlands

The two-time defending champions got off to a slow start by their standards, besting Vietnam 3-0 on Saturday. But as they say, a win is a win no matter the score. The Netherlands should be the toughest test for the U.S. in group play, but there’s no reason to think they won’t grab another three points, solidifying their position at the top of the group.

The Pick: United States (-150)
